With a revolutionary step towards making landlocked Telangana a formidable feeder of talent to India’s booming coastal and maritime industries, the Telangana Council of Higher Education (TGCHE) has announced the introduction of a comprehensive three-year undergraduate programme—BBA in Maritime Technology, Commerce, and Management.
Starting from the 2026–27 academic session, the course aims to train the state’s youth for specialised careers in the maritime, shipping, logistics, and global supply chain sectors, aligning with the Centre’s Maritime India Vision 2030 and the ambitious Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
Bridging the Skill Gap for a $5 Trillion Economy
The decision to launch a maritime-centric course in a state with no sea connectivity underscores a strategic shift by the TGCHE to future-proof the state’s workforce. Nearly 95% of India’s trade by volume moves through sea routes, and with the government targeting an investment of ₹80 lakh crore in the sector by 2047, over 1.5 crore jobs are expected to be generated nationally.
The new multidisciplinary course combines commerce, management, technology, and legal-regulatory frameworks. Unlike a generic business administration degree, this syllabus is designed specifically to produce skilled graduates capable of excelling in port management, international trade logistics, shipping finance, and blue economy initiatives.

Today’s mantra is: be updated or you will be outdated. We introduced this programme because there is a severe shortage of trained professionals in the maritime sector,”* said Prof. V. Balakista Reddy, Chairman of the TGCHE, in an exclusive interaction.
He added that the curriculum has been developed with direct input from industry stakeholders. “We prioritised industry linkages through MoUs, advisory boards, and internships. Institutions offering these courses must tie up with industry partners to ensure placements. The aim is to make our students readily employable after graduating,” he told Vidyapost.
A Flexible, Industry-Ready Roadmap
Prof. Reddy revealed that the TGCHE is not just launching a course but building an ecosystem. “In our meeting with Vice-Chancellors, we discussed the importance of systematic academic planning. We will provide learning material and facilitate resource persons. Our focus is on integration of technology with managerial skills,” he said, outlining a 25-year vision to make Telangana a human resource hub for the national logistics and shipping boom.
Overcoming the Landlocked Challenge
While Telangana lacks direct access to the coastline, Prof. Reddy is confident that the programme’s strong focus on logistics and commerce will compensate for geographical distance. The curriculum covers supply chain analytics, international shipping law, and port economics, ensuring that graduates are not dependent on physical proximity to the sea to work in corporate shipping, warehousing, or export houses.
“Even if the state doesn’t have a port, the students don’t need to go to the sea; the sea needs to come to the students in terms of knowledge. By equipping them with commerce and management skills, these students will be placed in various departments of the shipping and logistics industry,” Prof. Reddy asserted, eyeing a target where every graduating batch sees at least 4-5 students per college get absorbed into the blue economy.
Aligned with National Ambition
The programme directly supports the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, which aims to transform India into a top maritime nation by the centenary of its independence. With initiatives like the Sagarmala project and a recent ₹69,000 crore package for shipbuilding, the demand for skilled managers, commerce graduates, and technocrats in this sector is skyrocketing.
Prof. V. Balakista Reddy concluded that the TGCHE is committed to a long-term roadmap for the next 25 years. “We are working on a blueprint to integrate AI, logistics, and defence studies. This BBA is just the beginning of a journey where Telangana’s youth will lead India’s trade competitiveness globally.”
