For the first time since 2009, India has surpassed all other sending nations. 331,602 international students from India went to the United States to further their education. States in 2023–2024—a two-thirds increase over the previous year.
Graduate and Optional Practical Training (OPT) academic levels saw the biggest increases in student enrollments in India (97,556; +41 percent). Despite a 4 percent drop, China remained the second most popular place of origin. The nation continued to be the top sender of undergraduates and non-degree students.
There were 61,552 Chinese students enrolled in Optional Practical Training (OPT), a 12% increase. In the United States, more than half of all international students were from China and India combined. Many other nations that send students to the US saw rapid growth, and eight of the top 25—Bangladesh, Colombia, Ghana, India, Italy, Nepal, Pakistan, and Spain—reached all-time highs.
For the second year in a row, Sub-Saharan Africa had the highest growth rate of any region in the world, with totals rising by 13% in 2023–2024 after increasing by 18% in 2022–2023.
